Artstories UK. Intergenerational community-based art research project creating artist's books with adolescents, adults and college students through a Fulbright Distinguished Chair/Visiting Professorship at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

 

2016-18

Artstories RVA. Intergenerational community-based art research projects in Richmond, VA  with middle schoolers, their art teachers and college students; creating woodcuts, writing and performance pieces on impressions of community and hopes for community development and improvement. Funded by a VCU Presidents Research Quest Fund Grant of $48,000. A second project creating Richmond-themed, social justice focused alphabet books to promote literacy with Highland Park community members and VCU students at the Six Points Innovation Center (6PIC).

 

2012 – 2013 and 2015 - 2016

ArtCart: Saving the Legacy. Research Center for Arts and Culture, Teachers College, Columbia University, NY.  Lead faculty for an intergenerational, interdisciplinary, inter-institutional research and service-learning program that that connects aging professional artists with interdisciplinary teams of university students to prepare/preserve and document their creative work. During the program, professional artists also exemplify social engagement, high self-esteem and self-motivated productivity while also needing environmental modifications to their studios, and sometimes health interventions to maintain and increase productivity, prevent falls, manage fatigue and reduce clutter in order to continue being creative and producing art.

 

2009 – 2019

Artstories: In their Own Words—Portraits of Master Educators. This life history and visual storytelling research partially funded by a faculty grant from the Corcoran College of Art & Design, involved video taping the life history of aging arts educators as a teaching resource. DVDs of the interviews are available for Judith Burton, Renee Darvin, Graeme Sullivan, Gladys Bloch and Lillian Burwell. The second half of the research is in process and involves creating mixed media portraits of each educator interviewed that will comprise an exhibition of interviews and artworks.  Interviews with educators will continue.

 

2006 – 2007

Hand-in-Hand, Building Community on Common Ground.  Urban Ministry Center, Charlotte, NC.

Joint research project with the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte, NC and art students  from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte collecting the oral histories of the homeless served by the center and working with them on the creation of a series of  narrative art quilts (4) connected to the oral histories of the people involved and the activities and services provided by the center.

 

2001 – 2002

Developed curriculum guides for each level that integrated social studies, history,

visual art and music. The guides were funded by a grant from the William Penn Foundation.  Guides were distributed in Spring 2005 to K-8 public school teachers.

04/2004 Served on the Philadelphia Museum of Art Curriculum Advisory Committee in developing curriculum materials for

the African Art, African Voices exhibition at the museum. The materials were published and are available through the education department at the museum.
